I’m Megan from Trinity High School, and I have just finished a week of work experience at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
I chose to do my work experience in communications because, when I heard about the role, I didn't know much about it and wanted to find out more about what the job entails.
This week I have been doing many different jobs with the communications team and the charity manager. I have been introduced to all new roles in a hospital that I didn’t know existed, which has been very interesting to learn about.
I have been to multiple meetings with other members of staff, including the new Director of Estates and Facilities Gareth Hughes, where I got to know why he chose to apply for that position. I also got to accompany Charity Manager Emily Whelan to a meeting with Dr Arora, a breast surgeon who will be doing an incredible charity walk up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the breast unit.
I was given the opportunity to write up some news stories on recent and upcoming events, as well as designing some social media posts for the Trust. For example, I wrote a news story on the Trust projects shortlisted for the 2025 Nursing Times Awards, explaining a bit about each project and how important it is to recognise nurses’ work throughout the year. I was also shown some of the software that the communications team use, such as graphic design tools, social media scheduling tools and a website content management system.
The charity manger and I also went on a walk around the hospital site, to look at the green spaces and consider how they can be improved for staff and patients. We also talked about money management.
I have really enjoyed spending a week with the team. They have all made it very interesting for me, showing me the fast-paced elements of the job, such as when a media enquiry comes through with a tight deadline, meaning the communications team must gather all the information and generate a response quickly. I have also seen some of the harder parts of the job, which aren’t always exciting but still need to be done.
It has been a very educational week that I will definitely be taking advantage of, I am very grateful for the team’s time taken to help teach me about their job. Thank you.
