The League of Friends café at Tameside Hospital is on the lookout for new volunteers to join the team.

The café is staffed entirely by volunteers and has worked with the Trust for over 50 years, providing more than £1million to help the Hospital during this time.

In previous years, money raised by the League of Friends has purchased electronic scooters to transport patients around the Hospital and donated £100,000 to the Trust’s recent CT scanner appeal.

They are looking to continue their work with the help of additional volunteers.

Located in our Green Suite inside the Hartshead Building, the café is open on weekdays (excluding Bank Holidays) between 9am-3:30pm.

Roles include typical kitchen duties, such as food and hot drink preparation, serving customers and helping to keep the café clean and tidy.

The positions are flexible and volunteers can give as much or as little of their time as they are able to, and applicants can complete a trial before committing to the role.

Arthur Egan, 75, has been a volunteer for over seven years and regularly helps out in the café.

“I’m proud to be a volunteer. You meet lots of interesting people and hear some lovely stories,” he said.

“I think it helps me more than it helps the NHS! When I retired, I planned to do something rather than sit in the armchair at home. I’m 75 and as fit as a fiddle.”
