Staff at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust geared up for some ‘wheelie’ special NHS birthday celebrations at Tameside Hospital last week.
For the second year running, volunteers donned their cycling shorts and hopped on indoor exercise bikes to raise money for Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity.
This year, 13 members of staff pedalled for 30 minutes each, aiming to hit 77 miles to mark 77 years of the NHS.
But the team didn’t just cross this finish line, they freewheeled right past it, achieving a collective total of 120 miles.
And every mile made a difference; the event raised £330 for Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity. These funds will go towards supporting patients and their families receiving care at Tameside who are receiving care at Tameside Hospital and in the community.
Alongside cycling, the NHS birthday event also featured a bake sale with sweet treats available for staff and visitors, and the perfect energy boost for hungry cyclists.
Tameside businesses and community groups got involved in the celebrations too. Local fitness centre Astley Sports Village generously provided two indoor exercises for the day, while Tameside Voices choir stopped by to provide some musical motivation.
“Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s NHS birthday fundraiser a success, whether through cycling, supporting or donating,” said Charity Manager Emily Whelan.
“NHS charities have been part of our health service from the very beginning. With demand for NHS charities growing rapidly, we are proud to fund projects across Tameside and Glossop that support patients, families and our brilliant NHS colleagues when they need it most.”
The NHS birthday takes place each year on 5 July, marking the anniversary of its creation in 1948. It is an opportunity to celebrate past achievements while looking forward to the future.
This year’s anniversary coincided with the publication of the government’s new 10 Year Health Plan for England, which sets out a bold and ambitious new course to guarantee that the NHS will continue to provide care to all who need it for generations to come.
