Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity is proud to announce a major upgrade to the Women’s Health Unit at Tameside Hospital, thanks to a generous £165,000 donation from the hospital’s League of Friends organisation.

This extraordinary gift was made possible through the remarkable legacy of Mary Goodliffe JP, who was a dedicated supporter of the League of Friends.

Thanks to Mary, this funding will enable the Women’s Health Unit to relocate to the Yellow Suite, where new, modern, fit-for-purpose procedure rooms and clinic spaces will be created.

Altogether, the project represents a £588,000 investment in women’s health, with the Trust funding the remaining balance from a £1.2M funding pot for improvements.

The move to the Yellow Suite marks a significant step forward in delivering a calm, comfortable, and dignified environment for women accessing care. The new space will offer dedicated areas for gynaecology and maternity patients, improving comfort and privacy, and creating a more welcoming setting for both routine and urgent treatments.

It will also allow clinical teams to offer more procedures outside of surgical theatres, reduce waiting times, and expand valuable training opportunities for the next generation of consultants and nursing staff.

Zoe Turner, Divisional Director of Surgery, Women and Children’s, said:

“This project represents a truly exciting moment for women’s services. The yellow suite will give us the modern, purpose-designed environment our patients deserve; somewhere that feels calm, private, and reassuring from the moment people walk through the door. It will help us offer more treatments more quickly, support families during some of the most important moments of their lives and create a fantastic space for training the clinicians of the future. We are deeply grateful for the generosity that has made this possible.”

Emily Whelan, Charity Manager at Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity, added:

“Mary Goodliffe’s legacy, shared so generously by the League of Friends of Tameside Hospital, will have a lasting and meaningful impact on women and families across our community. This gift is creating a space where care will be safer, kinder and more personalised for years to come. We cannot thank the League and Mary enough for enabling such an inspiring improvement for the Tameside and Glossop community.”

The project aligns with the vision of the charity’s Everyone Matters Fund, supporting initiatives that enhance patient experience, staff wellbeing, and the delivery of compassionate, high-quality care.

Works are set to begin shortly, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for women’s health at Tameside and Glossop.
