Here in Tameside we are big fans of cycling, it is fun, cheap and good for the environment.

Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.

The health benefits of regular cycling include:

  • increased cardiovascular fitness
  • increased muscle strength and flexibility
  • improved joint mobility
  • decreased stress levels
  • improved posture and coordination
  • strengthened bones
  • decreased body fat levels
  • prevention or management of disease
  • reduced anxiety and depression and it’s a fun way to get fit

Tameside has an amazing range of dedicated cycle routes, stunning countryside and specialised facilities all waiting to be explored by bike.  Routes range from smaller local circuits to large sections of famous national cycling trails. There are routes suited to all ages and abilities, and facilities where you can practice your cycling skills.

This year we are supporting Cycle to Work Day, now in its ninth year, Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s favourite one-day commuting event. The idea is simple – to celebrate everyday cycling.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a new, existing or returning cyclist – Cycle to Work Day is an opportunity to get in the saddle and experience a host of benefits. From boosting wellbeing to better health, seeing the local area and improved finances; cycling offers it all.

Riding to work or the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. An estimated one billion people ride bicycles every day – for transport, recreation and sport.
