Two further staff members at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS FT have been commended for their hard work, dedication and compassion with a Who's Your Hero award.
The award recognises those who go beyond the call of duty to provide exceptional care for patients, and staff can be nominated by their peers or members of the public.
Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Adam Armitage, was nominated as his efforts meant a child coming to the end of their life could be discharged from the High Dependency Unit and return home to die with dignity.
Thanks to the support of Dr Armitage, the Children’s Community Team were confident that the child could go home. He made sure the team had everything they needed and went to the child’s house to speak with the family, answering their questions and providing the support they needed during the most difficult of times.
Though this is an incredibly sad story, Dr Armitage’s strength of character led to the best possible outcome given the tragic circumstances. Being willing to have such difficult conversations and make tough decisions demonstrated true compassion and courage.
Karen Wright and Dr Jacqui Birch, who also work in the Children’s Unit at Tameside Hospital, were fellow recipients of an award in recent weeks.
Following a previous peer review which highlighted areas for improvement, Karen and Jacqui put in a tremendous amount of work into the service which resulted in an extremely positive external peer review.
One of the comments said the review had “identified many areas where the service excels and provides a high standard of care to its patients and their families.”
